A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
