This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
